Writing a letter of interest shows focus and enthusiasm and can open the door to a job offer. Understanding what a letter of interest is will help you write one correctly. A letter of interest is a letter of inquiry. The inquiry is into whether the company is hiring for a certain position. You send the letter of interest, asking about job positions they may have available. It also briefly describes your experience, education, or skills related to the position and why you would be a good fit for the job and the company.
A letter of interest is different from a cover letter, which you may be more familiar with. Cover letters are sent in direct response to an advertised job position and are part of the application process. It is also not the same as a letter of recommendation, which you would have someone write on your behalf after applying for a job. A letter of interest is sent when there is no known job advertised. It is an effort to solicit a job that might exist but isn’t advertised.
When constructing your letter of interest, you want to ensure that it consists of the following three main parts:
The introduction and purpose should come at the beginning of the letter and is the opening paragraph. It will make clear that you are writing the letter speculatively, to inquire about a job position. You may inquire about one job position, or it could be a general inquiry about any job openings at the company.
This section should include a few favorable facts you know about the company or, at the very least, why you have an interest in working for them.
Once you’ve explained the purpose of your letter (i.e., to inquire about a job opportunity), it’s time to highlight why you would make a great candidate for a position at the company. You would do this by talking about the skills, experience, and/or education you have in the field and how your talents could benefit the company.
Wrap up your letter of interest by suggesting a meeting or phone call to discuss a job with the company. Also, enclose your resume, so they can see the full details of your experience.
Formatting a letter of interest should follow the same rules for formatting a business letter. Use the following:
Before writing a letter of interest, find out who would be the appropriate recipient at the company. If it doesn’t get into the right hands, you won’t have the opportunity for an interview. You’ll also need to do some research on the company, so you can add a few complimentary facts about them in your letter.
Once your company research is complete (who to write to and what the company is like), it’s time to review why you would make a good fit for a position. You may have a broad range of skills and experience, or your experiences may be narrow. Either way, you will focus only on your relevant skills in the letter.
Make your letter of interest brief, polite, and to the point. Include your resume with it. It’s best to send a hard copy of a letter of interest because it’s more formal and more likely that the recipient will read it. An email letter could very well end up in a spam folder.
Finally, don’t forget to review your letter by double-checking it for spelling and grammar errors.
