Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering awards open for entry – New Civil Engineer

26 Apr, 2022 By Claire Smith
Celebrating the role models and organisations empowering women in construction and engineering is the aim of a new awards jointly launched by NCE and its sister title Construction News.
The awards are part of a joint programme by the two magazines under the Inspiring Women in Construction & Engineering initiative, which is sponsored by Curtins and Wilmott Dixon. Building on the previous NCE Recognising Women in Engineering Awards and CN Inspiring Women in Construction, the two publications will now work together to provide networking opportunities and learning resources to help women make career progress and celebrate organisations that are great places to work for women.
The initiative will focus on mentoring this year and kicked off with a free webinar event on the topic and will include a workshop this summer before culminating with the awards on 6 October.
There are seven categories open for entry which will recognise the women and teams that stand out as exceptional and are designed to showcase both individual and organisation wide initiatives.
“Honouring and showcasing those who have made a difference for women in the industry is not only important for the individuals and teams themselves, it also is critical to create role models for those looking to come into the industry,” said NCE editor Claire Smith. “Construction and engineering have been facing skills crisis for decades, the only way to solve this is to get more people – men and women – to join the industry. Historically construction has failed to attract the same number of women as men so events like this are important to show that the sector is one that will support women and raise the profile of the industry as an attractive career path for all.”
Entries to the awards must be made by 20 May. Full details of the categories and criteria can be found on the event website but the award is open to individuals are Technical Excellence, Contribution to Project, Inspirational Leadership, Contribution to Gender Diversity – which is open to anyone, not just women – and Rising Star. For organisations working in construction and civil engineering, the categories open to enter our Excellence in Outreach and Excellence in Business Culture.
Winners of the award will be announced at a gala event in London in the evening on 6 October. In addition to winning a trophy the individual winners will also gain mentoring support through the programme to further boost their careers.
