Parvathy and Lakshmi
Thiruvananthapuram: Hearing impairment never came in the way of these twin sisters from Thiruvananthapuram’s Thirumala, who cleared the Indian Engineering Services Exam (IES) 2021. Parvathy and Lakshmi have cleared the IES under civil engineering sections with ranks of 74 and 75 respectively. Interestingly, the duo is the two candidates from Kerala who got listed in the first 100 ranks of IES 2021. Notably, they never enrolled in any coaching centres and solely relied on self-study for cracking this highly competitive exam.
Parvathy and Lakshmi are the daughters of TV Nagar native Seetha and her husband late Ajikumar. Seetha is a junior superintendent in PWD and its her sheer efforts that steered the family after her husband's demise. Parvathy and Lakhsmi were just 2-year-old when their father passed away. The duo has an elder brother named Vishnu, who is also hearing-impaired. He too was studious and presently works as an assistant engineer in PWD.
After realising that the twin babies are also hearing-impaired, Seetha and her husband vowed that their children should not undergo special education. As a result, the twins were enrolled at the National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH), Aakkulam at the age of one and half years. Following this, they completed their normal schooling like other children as per their parents' wish. They learnt to understand words from the lip movement of others and interact with them.
After schooling, both follow the precedent set by the elder brother Vishnu and joined with College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET) for engineering. It was Vishnu who motivated his younger siblings to dream of becoming civil servants. Since 2019, the duo is trying for it and now their efforts have turned fruitful.
