Nine years after a near-fatal accident this Kollam native aces Civil Services Exam – Onmanorama

Every achievement of Rohin Raj is a testimony of his never-say-die attitude. The Kollam native beat the odds to secure the 644th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination, 2021.
While he was an eighth-semester student of the Mechanical Engineering course in 2013, Rohin Raj met with an horrendous accident. He had come home for the temple festival. A huge ‘kuthira kolam’ (horse frame) broke off and fell on Rohit, leaving him unconscious with serious injuries. One side of his face was paralysed, and he suffered from partial hearing loss. He was also unable to blink his right eye.
But refusing to bow down, Rohin focussed on his future. After completing his studies in 2017, he joined for the Civil Services training in Thiruvananthapuram. He cleared the Kerala Administrative Service (KAS) exam in 2020.
The news of the Civil Services Exam results reached Rohin, while he was with his 35 KAS batchmates in the Kannur district as part of training. His batchmates greeted the news of his achievement with much fervor. They enthusiastically narrated the incident of Rohin going to play football right before his Civil Services interview. Rohin is also grateful for the encouragement and support extended to him by his friends.
Rohin, 31, is the son of Sasthamkotta residents Rajasekharan Pillai and Indirabhai.
