UPSC to hold separate main exam for Indian Railway Management Service – Onmanorama


New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission has announced that a separate main examination would be conducted for appointment to the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS). The qualification for the new IRMS (Main) examination will be the Civil Services (Preliminary) examination.
Around 150 personnel would be appointed based on the new examination conducted by the UPSC from 2023 onwards.
The optional subjects for IRMS (Main) are Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Commerce and Accountancy. A candidate should choose one of these as optional subject. The applicants can refer the syllabus of the Civil Service Examinations for this one too.
There will be 30 vacancies in civil engineering, 30 for mechanical engineering, 60 for electrical and 30 openings in commerce and accountancy streams. Graduates in Engineering and Commerce as well as Chartered Accountants too can apply for these exams.
The Ministry of Railway and Ministry of Personnel have jointly decided to stop recruitment for the IRMS on the basis of the Civil Services (Mains) examination.
A limited number of candidates who qualify in the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be allowed for the IRMS (Main) Examination. The latter will have four descriptive papers.
• Stage 1: Qualifying paper 1 (an Indian language included in the Eighth Schedule: 300 marks) and Paper 2 (English: 300 marks).
• Stage 2: Two optional papers of 250 marks each. These papers determine the merit of the candidates.
• Stage 3: Interview (100 marks).
